Course Overview
This course has been developed to satisfy WHS risk management training requirements for various statutory positions within the Western Australian mining sector. Participants will learn to effectively consult with workers and stakeholders to implement and monitor workplace policies, procedures and programs to create a safe workplace.
What are statutory positions??
Part 10.7A of the Work Health and Safety (Mines) Regulations 2022 outlines the statutory positions required within mining operations. These positions are appointed by the mine operator to perform designated duties and responsibilities associated with the safe and effective operation of a mine.
Statutory roles are divided into a range of categories, each with specific responsibilities, competency requirements, levels of experience, and qualification standards. Certain positions may also require the holder to obtain a statutory certificate.
This course has been developed to meet the WHS risk management training requirements for the following statutory positions:
- Underground supervisor (non-coal)
- Underground supervisor (coal)
- Restricted quarry manager
- Statutory supervisor
- Mine air quality officer
- Electrical supervisor
- Noise officer
Course Outline
The key areas covered by this course include:
- Legislative and regulatory requirements applicable to the mining industry
- Structure and purpose of a Mine Safety Management System (MSMS)
- Obligations relating to training, workplace consultation, and incident response procedures
- Processes for monitoring and maintaining WHS compliance
- Consultation responsibilities, communication methods, advantages, and potential challenges
- Risk management principles, including hazard identification, risk assessment, implementation of control measures, and ongoing review of controls
- Applying and overseeing WHS policies, procedures, and safe work practices
- Workplace reporting obligations and record management requirements
Certification
Learners who are deemed competent will receive a Statement of Attainment which is recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework. This certification is nationally recognised. On successful completion, participants will be issued with a Statement of Attainment with the following units:
- BSBWHS414 - Contribute to WHS risk management
- BSBWHS411 - Implement and monitor WHS policies, procedures and programs
Course Requirements
This is an open entry course with no pre-requisite qualifications. To ensure you complete the course successfully, the following entry requirements apply:
Participants must:
- Be aged 18 years or over
- Have sound language and literacy skills (at least Year 10 English, or equivalent)
- Able to commit to the course duration and time commitment
- Learners must have access to a computer and the internet
- Must supply a Unique Student Identifier (USI)
- Have a valid email account and a telephone with a valid telephone number for learning and assessment communication, support session
